about pastel

Pastel came about in quite an unexpected way. With plans of heading off to university to become an art teacher, as a creative outlet, I began selling my handmade clothing to friends. As demand grew so did Pastel and we popped our first bottle of Moét when our online store launched late 2014.

We are an independent Australian label embodying a young and care free vibe with more than a little festival influence. Each limited edition garment is carefully considered, from its original design to the quality construction techniques we employ. The entire design process for every piece of clothing, jewellery and the leather accessories we sell takes place in our Lennox Head studio including the artwork for our own exclusive fabric prints and one-off festival pieces.

Quite simply, my heart and soul goes into every single item I sell.

Most weekends you’ll find me at markets around Byron Bay and the Gold Coast offering my designs in a beautiful and inviting stall. Music festivals are another favourite so look out for my pop up store at Byron Bay Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival…I love having the opportunity to meet my gorgeous customers so please pop in and say ‘hello’. Check out our Markets & Festivals page for more information.

responsible practices

We want to feel good about the designs we offer so we do everything we can to ensure our products are ethically produced. As much of the production process as possible takes place in our dedicated design studio, a light and airy workspace that encourages creativity.

Pastel also outsources part of the production process to a network of personally chosen makers we have established in Indonesia. We work closely with our suppliers and take great care to develop mutually beneficial business relationships and in many cases, ongoing friendships. All of the working environments we have seen are clean and comfortable and even on impromtu visits the staff appear to be happy, relaxed and valued by their employer. To us, their presentation and positive attitudes indicate quality working conditions and fair treatment.

With a genuine vision for sustainability, Pastel focuses on small production runs, creating a product where quality visibly overshadows quantity. Pre-shrinking all fabric and trims ensures a more reliable fit and increased garment life. We also pre-plan exact usage of our printed fabric to avoid waste. In our market stall we offer only paper packaging, using recycled materials wherever possible and recycling almost all of the small amount of waste produced at each market.

Our priority is trading in a manner that is kind to our fellow humans and this precious planet. We want our customers to leave us with a sense of having purchased something special.
